Project DISCC at Barilla Center for Food and Nutrition in Milan

With the world still struggling with the problems of hunger and malnutrition, Obesity and over weight population and food waste, many people are working hard to find concrete solutions and ways  to over come the current food system which needs complete overhauling for better. In response to this the BCFN in  Milan has organized a 5th platform for different stake holders to discuss and share ways how we can achieve sustainability in the food system there by feeding the world without harming the earth and its resources. In this forum, Project DISCC has been represented by its founder Edie Mukiibi who is also one of the panelists on the round table discussion on Water: The Imperative for a sustainable Planet. Many speakers emphasized the importance of sustainable education that will change the current food system which Carlo Petrini, the President of Slow Food international has blamed to promote food pornography other than education. Edie Mukiibi has stressed the importance of small initiatives like DISCC and a thousand gardens in Africa project that are grass route initiative and better example of the sustainable education initiatives that have the potential to change the global food system. The water conflicts in Africa have more than doubled and due to the influx of  new water demanding crop varieties replacing the valuable african biodiversity and also the influx of the exotic animal breeds that have greatly increased water demand and caused an unfavorable competition for water, resulting into conflicts. If we are to reduce water consumption in Agriculture, we need to promote local small scale agriculture that uses less water demanding crop varieties and animal breeds. We need to educate young people on issues related to food, water and Agriculture, we need to involve them in many projects that aim at creating a sustainable food system, we need to make them realize their contribution both positive and negative to the food system world wide. They are the ones with very ridiculous life styles that affect food and contribute to food waste. This 5th Forum on Food and Nutrition held today at Barilla Center for Food and Nutrition is an example of platforms where great ideas are shared, where people are getting an insight into how different people view the 2015 expo that will take place in Milan, where we are getting to understand the Draft Milan Protocol, and where we meet  many great thinkers and activists.

Project DISCC Recognized by Sawa World.

Today the 30th of August 2013 at St Lawrence University Kampala the home of Sawa world, Sawa world has Joined Ashoka, World Watch Institute, Reuters and Food Think Tank to recognize Project DISCC as one of the world's leading social entrepreneurship ideas that have the potential to end extreme poverty and bring about Food sovereignty among the rural communities and most especially the young people. This has been confirmed by the Certificate of recognition handed over to the Founder of Developing Innovations in School and Community Cultivation (Project DISCC) a the 5th Sawa World Summit held at St. Lawrence University Kampala which has been attended by over 30 Sawa leaders, Sparks and Guests. In attendance are officials from the Dutch Embassy and Project DISCC coordinators Noel and Roger who have made tremendous efforts to see the project expand to the new level where it is.

Other Organizations that have recognized DISCC Project include ASHOKA, REUTERS, WORLD WATCH INSTITUTE, and FOOD THINK TANK.  

Background to project DISC

The participation of students in food production does not only enhance their taste behaviours and nutrition status, but can possibly lead to social transformation. Social conditions are complex and therefore positive attitude towards cultivation should be built within children that will in turn help to reverse the existing food shortages. The fact is that Project DISC aims at engaging School Children and the local youth communities in real life production of Clean, Safe and Fair food through working with schools and communities.
